The client is one of the top transporters of the products and materials that help feed, clothe, supply and power communities throughout America and the world. They are considered the standard bearer in transportation and logistics in the world with $23 billion in annual revenue, 48,000 employees, operating in 2,700 locations. The IT infrastructure alone is massive hosting three data centers, four mainframes and 1,700 servers. They have 6,000 miles of fiber, 14,000 miles of microwave, and 80,000 communication devices.

IT industry publications have bestowed numerous awards for our client in recent years. Among them: Computerworld awarded them a Best Practices in Business Intelligence, and also recognized them as one of the 100 Best Places to Work in IT over consecutive years. Spero has been a strategic staffing partner since January 2013 and has worked to support various IT projects and staffing needs throughout the entire organization.

The client, was about to embark on a 10 year IT modernization effort intended to revolutionize their industry.

This multi-billion dollar effort included a technology roadmap focused on key initiatives in; big data analytics, mobility, complex event processing, GIS, cloud SaaS, service quality, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), asset management, workforce enablement, and corporate systems. Separate and apart from that another business unit would be launching a multi-billion dollar project of their own for a federally mandated project called Positive Train Control (PTC).

Each project initiated would be enterprise level and would require substantial IT resources to execute. In addition, many projects would launch simultaneously, while others would be staged in successive years. Historically our client relied on several well-known strategic partners to handle these initiatives, but had grown frustrated with their vendors’ inability to provide the volume of support, level of technical recruiting skill, and quality of service this effort required.

The backdrop to this massive effort is the changing demographics within the organization. Workforce issues loom large in the IT department. About 25% of the IT group’s leaders are age 55 or older, and in a couple more years nearly 40% of the entire workforce will be 55+. Identifying IT talent to achieve all of these goals was mission critical, and the client needed a partner who would be able to deliver in the face of all the expectations put forth.

After being selected as a national strategic partner for direct hire recruiting, Spero dedicated a team of experienced IT recruiters and account managers who developed a customized approach to the client’s needs. Initially, our team delivered on fulfilling several Sr. Java Developer roles in Topeka, KS, Kansas City, KS and Dallas-Fort Worth, TX facilities.

Several of these roles had been previously been given to our competitors who were unable to fill the roles even after months of recruiting on them. Based on the effort and success of our recruiting and account management teams, Spero was again selected as a strategic partner to fill two key roles; Sr. IT Manager for the Emerging Technologies group, and a Sr. Manager for Data Analytics and Big Data.

Due in great part to Spero’s ability to deliver IT talent across the enterprise, our client selected Spero as a primary strategic partner for all nationwide recruiting and staffing services. Over the last two years, Spero has been actively fulfilling IT consulting roles, contract IT roles, and IT staff augmentation roles.
